We all have an idea of the concept what duration is. What’s meant by the Duration of a file, is the overall runtime of the file. This is noted for video and audio files only and shows how long, with respect to time, the clip, song or recording is. It’s the time that is, typically, displayed in the media player you open the file in as well. However, the duration may vary depending on how a player interprets the Duration, but usually not more than by a few seconds.
The values for the Duration of a file can differ in their form. Here are some explanations for the most common ones:
- 00:05:15 - This value gives the Duration in the format of HH:MM:SS, thus the file would have a Duration of 0 hours, 5 minutes and 15 seconds
- 15.23 s - In this case, the Duration is given in seconds, noting that the file is 15.23 seconds long
- 200.541 - It's also possible that the value does not give any indication of the time unit which is usually given in seconds or, in some cases, milliseconds
